The RM SmartCache Administration website enables you to manage your RM SmartCache. If this is the first time you have visited this site, make sure you go to the Maintenance page to change your password before continuing.
The following pages are available on the website:
To move between the pages of the website, click the links that can be found at the bottom of each page.
The Status page displays system details and the current status of your RM SmartCache at a glance:
An amber light indicates that although your RM SmartCache is still working, you should contact Support.
An amber light indicates that your RM SmartCache is very busy.
If there are no other problems indicated, you can continue using it as normal.
If you have found other problems and need to contact Support, make sure they are aware that this light is red.
A red light indicates that your RM SmartCache service is not working properly.
An amber or red light indicates that although your RM SmartCache is working, you should check its physical condition and location to make sure:
If it meets these requirements, but there is still an amber or red light, contact Support.
The Configuration section shows the IP address of your RM SmartCache, and other system settings. If you contact Support, you will need to provide these details.
The display on the Status page is updated automatically at regular intervals, or you can click the Refresh button on your browser.
If you need to contact Support, we recommend that you print out the Status page so you can refer to the information, including the details about your system.
The Maintenance page enables you to carry out the following maintenance tasks:
When you received your RM SmartCache, you were given an initial password for this Administration website. However, you should change this to one of your own choice the first time you use these pages.
For security reasons we recommend that you do not divulge your password to anyone else. You can subsequently change it whenever you wish, especially if you think there has been a breach of security.
When deciding on a password, consider these points:
To change your password:
User ID logging can be set at one of the following levels:
Simply select the desired level from the drop-down list and then click on the Set Logging button. If you are unsure as to what level is currently set, refresh the Maintenance page - the current setting will be displayed in the drop-down list.
Important: You must ensure that users are unable to modify the proxy settings in their web browsers. If a user changes the proxy settings so that they no longer use the SmartCache as their proxy server, then the SmartCache will NOT be able to perform User ID logging for that user.
If the user ID logging level is set to "Enabled with security", log queries (performed via the Auditing page) will always return user information - revealing which username was used to visit which web site. This is the recommended setting.
If the user ID logging level is set to "Enabled without security", it may not always be possible to see which username was used to visit which web site. This could be because the RM SmartTracker client software was not installed and running on the computer from which the web site was visited, or because the web page was served by the SmartCache before the username information was gathered (a rare occurence which would only be possible on an extremely quiet network).
If the user ID logging level is set to "Disabled", no username logging will be performed - you will not be able to specify usernames in query criteria and queries will not return any user related information.
We recommend that you normally leave your RM SmartCache switched on. However, you may need to restart it if there was a red light on the Status page. You may want to shut it down and restart it, for example if you normally switch off all your computers over the holidays, or if you are going to move your RM SmartCache to another location.
To restart your RM SmartCache:
To shut down your RM SmartCache:
RM SmartCache carries out its own housekeeping automatically by deleting old and unused web pages periodically from its cache.
However, you may wish to delete cached web pages yourself.
To delete web content from the cache:
The Auditing page enables you to:
Your RM SmartCache keeps a log of which websites have been visited by which users. You can review all web pages visited by all users by leaving all the boxes blank, then clicking the Run Query button. If it takes a long time, you can refine the query by specifying one or more of the following:
If you check the box next to "URL summary only" this will restrict the query so that it only returns a list of sites visited, not the site's sub-pages.
If you check the box next to "Filtered hits only" this will restrict the query so that it only returns a list of sites which have been filtered by RM SafetyNet or RM SafetyNet Plus. Note: This will only work if you subscribe to one of these services.
If you leave the "Number of lines to return" box empty, the query will, by default, return the 5000 most recent entries which match your query criteria from the log. You can enter your own figure in this box to increase or decrease the number of lines returned. Note: The greater the number of lines chosen, the longer the query will take to run.
Once you have decided upon your query criteria, click the Run Query button.
When you click the Run Query button, the results are displayed in time and date order, with the most recent activity first.
For queries for which the "URL summary only" box was NOT checked, the results are presented in a table with the following headings:
Because many web pages include a large number of graphics, these are normally omitted from the results to prevent them from becoming too long. However, if a graphic has been filtered by RM SafetyNet or RM SafetyNet Plus (and consequently not displayed to the user), this will be reported as such in the results.
For queries for which the "URL summary only" box WAS checked, only the username and the address of the site visited (not the site's sub-pages) are presented. Date and time are not displayed because this type of query is designed as a quick reference as to which sites a user has visited within the time specified (e.g. today, yesterday, this week, or last week). If a user visited a site or its sub pages more than once, only one item is returned.
At the bottom of all results tables, you will find a link which says "Download these results as a CSV file". If you click on this link with the right-hand mouse button and then click on "Save Target As..." you can decide where you would like to save the results for later viewing. You can subsequently open the file in an application of your choice (e.g. Microsoft Excel).
The file will be stored in CSV (comma separated variable) format, which means that the data presented in the table will be stored with a comma between each entry of each column.
Note: If you receive an error message when you attempt to download the file, you should retry after running the query again. The SmartCache will delete any query files which are more than 10 minutes old every time a query is run. So, if you run a query and do not decide to download the results immediately, and another query is subsequently run more than 10 minutes later from another browser window, then your results file will be deleted.

The graphs and statistics provide usage information that can help you analyse when and how the Internet is being used through your RM SmartCache.
Click the link on the Auditing page to view SmartCache graphs and statistics. This takes you to the Long Term Usage page, which shows the following information:
In the Detailed Weekly Reports section of the Long Term Usage page, click the link for a given date range to display the statistics for that week. This takes you to the Weekly Report page, which shows the following tables and graphs for that week:
A table showing usage of your RM SmartCache. Each individual element of a web page counts as a separate request, for example each graphic on a page is a separate request. The requests and data served from cache indicate how many of these requests were for items already stored on your RM SmartCache.
A comparison of usage for each day of that week.
A comparison of usage for each hour of the day for that week. The daily and hourly reports can help you to identify the busiest times, and whether there is any Internet usage at unexpected times.
The 20 most visited sites for that week. It shows not just the individual website addresses, but the sites of the Internet servers on which the web pages, graphics, etc. are held.
